WiMAX inaugurates Austria's first wireless broadband Internet service

Vienna, 23 September 2005 – WiMAX Telecom GmbH is inaugurating Austria's first wireless broadband network on schedule in September 2005 in the province of Burgenland. As the Austrian leader in WiMAX technology, WiMAX Telecom adopted the current IEEE 802.16-2004 wireless access standard right at the outset and will now continuously introduce the technology to other areas of the country, some areas which still suffer from a lack of broadband coverage.

The first phase of implementation, in Burgenland, will be completed on schedule by the end of September 2005. The first locations to benefit from the new Internet technology will include Eisenstadt, Neusiedl, Oberwart, Oberpullendorf, Güssing and the surrounding areas plus a number of other towns and villages.

Impressive range and bandwidth
WiMAX Telecom is commercially using equipment based on Intel®   Wimax chip known as Rosedale, making Austria one of the first countries in the world to benefit from wireless broadband. The chipset allows data transfer at up to 20 MBit/s over distances of up to 25 km. Even in urban areas with non line of sight between the base station and the subscriber, WiMAX can still achieve an operating range of up to 2 km. During 2006 WiMAX Telecom plans to start in house coverage in major Austrian cities.

International acclaim for rapid implementation
“We are very pleased to be working with WiMAX Telecom as they are paving the way towards Austria's first wireless broadband network,” said Scott Richardson, general manager of Intel’s Broadband Wireless Division. “WiMAX Telecom has been able to implement a commercial WiMAX network solution in just a few months.”

Dov Bar-Gera, Chairman of CEO of WiMAX Telecom Group, adds: "Our network in Burgenland makes us one of the first providers in the world to be able to offer to customers this new and effective standard."

Peter Ziegelwanger, Managing Director WiMAX Telecom Austria’s operation adds: “We only commenced operations in March 2005 and have therefore set up
a broadband network based on the latest technology in just a very short time.”

The network in Burgenland was established with the support of the Government of the State of Burgenland.
